First of all, for anyone visiting for the first time because of the Comic Fury Alternate Universe Art Exchange 2016, WELCOME! Take a look around and maybe you'll see something you like!

Committing arson is highly irresponsible (not to mention illegal).

It's less irresponsible if you can make sure that you are not tied to the crime...

Now imagine Dr. Gabrielle Armstrong, respected head of the Archaeology Department at Jefferson University and head of the Autumn Bay branch of the Shadowlight League (which is kind of like saying "captain of the Federation starship Enterprise, by the way), having been in enough positions in her life where she not only needed a spell to scrub a crime scene, but also to spend the time and effort to develop such a thing...

Also, though this is the (probably temporary) end of one branch of Starry Wisdom, I heard a rumor that there is another one in Los Angeles...

Stands to reason that they would have a spell to scrub a crime scene, how else have they kept magic a secret for so long.

i often wondered if the visual energy effects from magic were completely for show. Like, maybe the scrubbing spell doesn't NEED to look like arson, but it was designed that way because it's cool. Maybe it's just that all magic-users are pyrotechnic enthusiasts at heart.

Oh, the actual FIRE is good old gasoline and a spark.

I always figured that it actually takes MORE energy to forego the flashy bits if the spell wants them. Plus, the flashy bits let the audience know what's going on.

Also, there is a reason that Fireball is a classic spell...

It's the first seriously useful AoE spell you get in most versions of D&D, the one that practically defines the class role as an artillery piece.

In 'real life magic systems' it's not so much a classic.

True. If Mercy were to go around casting fireballs, that would very clearly lead to being disappeared by the Shroud...

Most non-sorcerer mages HAVE to be more subtle.

Don't roast marshmallows over the burning wreckage of your enemies' property. Far too much of the smoke is carcinogenic or otherwise toxic even if you have nothing to fear from remaining at the scene of the crime.
