Black Gate is a sci-fi/fantasy 'coming of age' comic with drama overtones. It deals in relationships and culture clash. Rating is PG - PG13. While there is very little strong language, some of the content isn't suitable for younger audiances. Black Gate has war themes and they aren't minimized. There is 'onscreen' death among other violent themes that do occur in this comic.

The Magic of Dreams
The modern world is largely thought to be a knowable place. Science and logic build us technologies to explore and control our environment. Electricity and light allow us to cross vast distances and communicate almost instantly, sharing lives and knowledge in ways that would have been unthinkable just decades before. Magic, superstition, and the irrational have been driven from the center of our lives, replaced by electric lights, wireless internet, and the wonders of medicine… but driven from the center does not mean banished. Mystery still lingers at the edges, in the dark, and in the backs of our minds. Fear of places we can’t see and noises in the dark. Vanishing and disappearances. Ghost stories and folk tales. Lucky charms and little rituals. And of course… the nightly mystery. For nearly a third of our life, we exist in a state where ghosts and phantasms move about freely, distance and time are free to shift and change, and anything is possible: for nearly a third of our life, we sleep… and when we sleep, we dream.
Even to much of science, dreaming is a mystery. We have experiences we don’t understand. We see those who have passed from the world, and others who have never lived. We dream epic adventures and anxious nightmares. We dream worlds of magic, and sometimes magic can be dangerous. Its no wonder that we sleep and dream a little easier knowing we aren’t alone.
Welcome to the world of Smaller Totems, where the myths and magics of dreams linger in the dark after waking, and the words “it was just a dream” provide precious little comfort.
This Hostile Universe tells the story of Oliver, a young man trapped in a seemingly endless stream of worlds, linked to one another by portals. As he tries to make sense of his unusual dilemma, Oliver finds himself wandering between worlds, looking for a possible path back home.
A story that takes place in in Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos - it will also incorporate many more stories and worlds that Lovecraft wrote about.
Just as a fair warning, the story gets pretty intense at times and will touch on some things that make a lot of people very uncomfortable. If you stay with me through this whole journey, you will probably hate me before it's over. Seriously, this is not a story for children, fragile adults or cuddly tapirs.
I've only marked two of the content flags so far. I will mark the other two before I get to the first relevant scene.
That having been said:
To the Maya, the underworld, Xibalba (Literal translation: The Place of Fear) was a very real place. You could walk there if you were brave enough and strong enough for the journey. When you got there you would play a deadly ball game for the chance to win eternal life and glory. You can look around at how many people in this world have eternal life and glory to get a sense of how many people actually succeeded in this trial.
It is said that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
Will you take it?
